Wellsville High School teacher, Madonna Figura, wanted the opportunity to have her students ask questions with soldiers overseas live. Through videoconferencing, her idea became a reality. After students read the book, “The Gift of Valor”, about Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham of Scio, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for throwing himself on a grenade in Iraq and saving the lives of fellow Marines, Wellsville teacher Madonna Figura wanted to take the book a step further by having her students meet with troops overseas. The troops interviewed by the students were four members in the United States Army serving in Camp Taqaddum (known as TQ) in Iraq. The base is located within 10 miles of Fallujah. Their jobs are to provide convoy security for supplies being brought to the US military in Iraq. The serviceman also discussed their duties and living conditions. The call was arranged through the Freedom Calls Foundation, which is a non-profit group that connects members of military with their families.
