The National Geographic Bee, an educational program of the National Geographic Society, is a nationwide geography competition for U.S. schools with grades four through eight, designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. Zan will now take a written test to see if he qualifies for the New York State Geographic Bee competition to be held later in the school year. His name will also be placed upon a permanent Geography Bee plaque located in the main hallway of the elementary school.

Zan prepared for the GEO bee by studying the GEO packet provided to all of the participants, and he learned the names of the states and their capitals. Also, Zan had his mom give him practice questions to prepare for the competition. Although Zan's favorite subject in school is science, he really did enjoy participating in the GEO Bee. Some day Zan would love to visit Australia to see the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House, and the Outback to see the kangaroos.
