Zan Qaderi, a fifth grade student,won the Wellsville Elementary School National Geographic Bee on Wednesday, January 6th. A total of 17 fourth and fifth grade students competed in this local competition. Nicholas Brown finished in second place.

In the last days prior to winter break, fifth grade classes got a chance to examine actual organs from a pig as part of the culminating lab following their unit on the human body. Students read clues posted by each organ, and identified its name and the system it belonged too. This was the first time most of the students had ever handled internal organs. The hands-on experience brings the information beyond mere textbook learning. Of course, there is a slight "gross" factor, which also helps the information stay stuck in their memories! On December 10-11, 2009 students in grades 2-5 will spend their Physical Education class working on various jump rope stations and activities. The American Heart Association sponsors the "Jump Rope for Heart" event. This is the fourth year that the elementary school physical education department has entered into this event. All of the participants receive a full class of jumping activities and information in regard to the importance of fitness and healthy living choices. The students will be able to understand the importance of fitness in daily living choices and the connection to the P.E. Fitness curriculum. Student participants receive a certificate and sticker for the day's activities and will be presented a banner for participation to be hung up in the gym. Students may also raise funds for the American Heart Association through pledge sheets. The P.E. department hopes to make this an annual event for students.

Help your kids grow up responsibly

You Probably know some people who've never quite grown up. They may have jobs, but never seem to be able to live on their own.

One reason may be that they didn't learn how to take on the responsibilities of adult life. Their parents may not have taught them the skills they need--to balance a budget or to take care of basic life skills like cooking or doing laundry.

If you want your child to grow up and live as an independent adult, you need to start teaching him those skills today. Here are some ways you can help your child develop the habits that will get him ready for adult life:

• Expect him to get himself up in the morning. Even a first grader can learn to wake up to an alarm.
• Teach him to care for his own clothes. Young children can put clothes in the laundry basket. They can fold their own clothes and put them away. Older kids can learn how to do laundry.
• Help him manage money. Whether it's an allowance or payment for extra chores, teach your child the value of saving.
• Enlist his help. Every family member should do something that helps out the family. Young children can set the table. Older kids can learn how to prepare a simple meal. When they do these things, thank them for making your home run more smoothly.
• Volunteer. Make time for your family to volunteer together. Doing something for others builds responsibility.
